The K-wire was introduced by Martin Kirschner in 1909. Since the introduction it is inserted into bone by drilling, first by hand, later on by high speed drill. The latter is considered as a simple and quick method. This technique however also knows some disadvantages like thermal related damage which can result in osteonecrosis, pintrack infections and preterm K-wire loosening.

The aim of our research project is to create a K-wire insertion technique with the advantages of the drilling technique without its disadvantages.
